Wind turbine brands and mergers

Many older UK wind farms use brands that no longer exist. Bonus was bought by Siemens in 2004, and Siemens' wind business merged with Gamesa in 2017 to form Siemens Gamesa. NEG Micon merged into Vestas in 2004, and MHI Vestas was the Mitsubishi and Vestas offshore joint venture until Vestas took full ownership. REpower was renamed Senvion in 2014, Acciona Windpower merged into Nordex in 2016, and GE acquired Alstom's wind business in 2015. Market share above counts each turbine under its current manufacturer group, while individual wind farm pages show the brand as recorded.

Turbine data and coverage

The REPD does not record turbine makes or models, so this guide combines three open sources, matched to REPD records: Open European Offshore Wind Turbine Database (EuroWindWakes) (Fischereit, Vollmer and Hansen, EuroWindWakes; includes data © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0); Wikipedia lists of onshore wind farms in the UK (Wikipedia contributors, CC BY-SA 4.0); OpenStreetMap turbine tags (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0). Offshore data is turbine-level and near-complete; onshore data is matched by name and location and covers 32% of onshore capacity. Where sources disagreed or a match was uncertain, the wind farm was left unmatched rather than guessed.

Frequently asked questions

Who makes the UK's wind turbines?

Siemens Gamesa is the largest supplier of the UK's operational wind turbines with 59% of matched capacity, followed by Vestas (31%). Figures cover 67% of UK operational wind capacity where the turbine make is known.

Who makes UK offshore wind turbines?

Offshore, Siemens Gamesa supplies 67%, Vestas supplies 32%, Senvion supplies 1% of operational capacity.

Are wind turbines made in the UK?

Most turbine nacelles and towers for UK wind farms are made in continental Europe. Siemens Gamesa manufactures offshore turbine blades in Hull, which have been used on several North Sea wind farms.

What happened to Bonus, NEG Micon and REpower turbines?

The brands were absorbed by larger manufacturers: Bonus became part of Siemens (now Siemens Gamesa), NEG Micon merged into Vestas, REpower was renamed Senvion, and Acciona Windpower merged into Nordex. This guide counts older turbines under today's manufacturer.

Sources and method

Figures come from the July 2026 extract of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero's Renewable Energy Planning Database (REPD), which tracks UK renewable projects through planning, construction and operation. Each figure is calculated directly from the source records and refreshes when a new snapshot is imported.

The REPD counts project records, not physical sites. Extensions, repowering schemes and later phases can appear as separate records, and very small turbines below the database threshold are not included. Status reflects the snapshot date; developers' later announcements can differ. Read the full methodology and limitations.
